What is a computer virus? |
| |
A virus is a program or piece of code that comes into your computer without your knowledge or permission and
attaches itself to necessary programs or your hard drive then copies itself, which alone can slow your system
to a crawl. More malicious viruses can cause your hard drive to lock up and require service. Viruses known as
worms can use your computer to send themselves over your internet connection to other people, which may cause
difficulties with your connection, and your internet provider.
Viruses enter your computer via email, a network connection, or portable media, then may start immediately
or hide until triggered by a certain event. Since most computer users do not realize that they have a virus on their
system, it is difficult to avoid a virus, even by only opening emails from trusted sources. The best defense is anti-virus
software with automatic updates. Grisoft's AVG Anti-Virus Professional Edition is available
here. |

What is spyware? |
| |
Spyware is software that gathers a computer user's information without their knowledge, usually for advertising purposes, though
some spyware is much more dangerous, taking credit card and password information. It differs from a virus in the way it enters the
computer, and it does not spread. Spyware can make its way into a computer by tricking the user into clicking a link that installs
the spyware, or by the user downloading a peer-to-peer, freeware or shareware program that has the spyware hidden within it.
Once on the computer, can be very difficult to uninstall and many times will require a complete reinstallation of your
operating system. Symptoms of spyware include a very slow internet connection after all other possibilities have been checked,
very frequent pop-up ads, items in the internet browser that you did not install, or it can even disable protective software
on your computer. While there are several anti-spyware programs out there, most only protect against a small percentage of spyware.
CounterSpy protects against more than 90% of known spyware and can be purchased here. |

Why do I need a firewall? |
| |
A firewall stands between your computer and the rest of the world, only letting in safe visitors from the outside and keeping
programs already on your computer from sending information out without permission. Without a firewall, a hacker can gain access
your computer and use its resources to attack large companies and organizations. If your computer has malicious software hiding on
it, this software can use the internet to download more malicious software or to send your information to trackers and identity
thieves. AVG Plus Firewall allows you to have more control over the security of your computer and is available
here. |
